My Body is Not An Island takes the shape of a fragmented, multi-faceted body that is part human, part vegetal and part fish. An animated, landscape-like environment, Eva Koťátková’s (1982) installation consists of crates, costumes and sculptures that come to life through performances including text and sound. Each act tells a different story: that of a child being bullied at school, a shrimp being boiled alive, a fish being pulled ashore and a bush being unrooted from its surroundings and transposed to the suburbs. The narratives are filled with both compassion and humor as well as cruelty; all of them call for increased empathy for human and non-human life.

The crates that form part of the ensemble point to the idea of storage, of the body as an archive of memories both joyful and traumatic, but also to bodies in movement and migration, and to bodies aiming to leave real and metaphorical confinements behind. As often in Koťátková’s work, the artist highlights how personal experiences are shaped by social codes and norms. Whereas her previous work has focused on psychiatric and educational conventions, in her most recent performative installations, Koťátková is homing in on the more-than-human world and our treatment of it.

Eva Koťátkovás (1982) Installation bildet eine landschaftsähnliche Umgebung, die aus Kisten, Kostümen und Skulpturen besteht, welche durch Performances mit Text und Ton zum Leben erweckt werden. Jeder Akt erzählt eine andere Geschichte: die eines Kindes, das in der Schule gemobbt wird, einer Garnele, die lebendig gekocht wird, eines Fisches, der an Land gezogen wird, und eines Busches, der aus seiner Umgebung herausgelöst und in die Vorstadt versetzt wird. Die Erzählungen sind sowohl von Mitgefühl und Humor als auch von Grausamkeit geprägt; sie alle rufen zu mehr Empathie für menschliches und nichtmenschliches Leben auf.

Die Kisten, die Teil des Ensembles sind, verweisen auf die Idee der Aufbewahrung, auf den Körper als Archiv für freudige und traumatische Erinnerungen, aber auch auf Körper in Bewegung und Migration sowie auf solche Körper, die reale und metaphorische Begrenzungen hinter sich lassen wollen. Wie so oft in Koťátkovás Werk hebt die Künstlerin hervor, wie persönliche Erfahrungen durch soziale Codes und Normen geprägt werden. Während sich ihre früheren Arbeiten auf psychiatrische und pädagogische Konventionen konzentrierten, nimmt Koťátková in ihren jüngsten performativen Installationen die mehr-als-menschliche Welt und unseren Umgang mit ihr ins Visier.
